Air Pollution

Many types of air pollutants are harmful to the environment and human health. Increased burning of fossil fuels is largely responsible for the steady increase in air pollutants throughout Canada.

Sometimes we can see or smell pollutants that cause poor air quality. Other pollutants cannot be detected by human senses. Most air pollution harmful to health comes from 5 main sources:

  • Ground level ozone
  • Carbon monoxide
  • Nitrogen dioxide
  • Particulate matter
  • Sulphur dioxide

These pollutants can cause respiratory illness, aggravation of asthma / allergy symptoms and even premature death.
