December 5, 2011
Clean Air Champion Sharon Donnelly will present the Air Aware Program to students at Ecole secondaire catholique Garneau in Ottawa, ON.
Sharon has represented Canada in over 45 World Cups, traveling around the globe during her 9 years on the National Triathlon Team. Canadian Champion 3 times over, she won Gold at the 1999 Pan Am Games and competed in the 2000 Olympics Games in Sydney. After retirement Sharon quickly moved into coaching and worked with the USA Triathlon Team at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center for 3 years leading to her going to Beijing 2008 Olympics as the coach for the USA Triathlon Team. Sharon uses her experiences to motivate others to never give up and love sport for what it is, because winning is rare, but the experiences of striving last a lifetime. Sharon is now back in Canada, focused on raising her 2 young children and making plans to get back to coaching.
Sharon's take on Clean Air Champions:

Why the environment is important to me:

As an athlete suffering from asthma, I am particularly affected by the quality of air and I have found my condition worsen over the years to the point where my racing and training was compromised. I train and race outdoors and I am totally dependent on the environment around me. Now with two young children, my desire to help in the fight to clean our air is greater than ever.

Why I'm a Clean Air Champion:

I am very concerned about the impact we are having on our environment and that each and every one of us must change our habits to make it better for our health and the health of our children. As an athlete suffering from asthma, I became knowledgeable about the effects of pollution on our body. As a mother I am concerned about the effects of environment on them now and into their future. I want to use my experiences from around the world to raise awareness of the need for Clean Air.
